5 COUNCIL EVENTS FOR 2014 (LAURA GOODMAN TO REPORT)
(a) Civic Service 3rd August 2014
(b) Candlelit Vigil 4th August 2014

(a) Civic Service 3 August 2014 -  It was reported that invites would be sent out at the end of the week.  The Civic Party would be meeting at the Town Hall, Winterton Marine Cadets will lead the parade to the Minster. Rev'd Chris Terry would be preparing the Order of Service.  Military representatives would be attending the service.  A Marque would be installed at the front of the Town Hall to serve refreshments for the children. Road Closures for the Parade were being arranged by David Helsdon. The Civic Party would leave the Town Hall at 10.40am.  The Royal Anglians and HMS Dauntless had been invited to attend but to date confirmation had not been received.

(b) Candlelit Vigil 4 August 2014 - It was reported that the floodlights would be turned off at the Minster leaving only two lights on to simulate a blackout for the start of the war. The service would be a 30 minute service and would start in light with the lights gradually being turned off. Also Council buildings would have all but one light turned off.  The British Legion reported that a service was being held in Gorleston Cemetery on the same date at 11.00 am.

(c) Festival of Remembrance 8 November 2014 - A meeting is to be held with the Salvation Army to discuss the service.   Chris Moore stated that they would be dropping the poppies from a flag which would be held up by two poles.  It was suggested that red crepe paper could be cut into the shape of poppies by school children. 

(d) Remembrance Day 9 November 2014 - Arrangements for this would commence in September.

(e) Interactive Family Event 4 August 2014 - Alan Carr reported on an Interactive family event to commemorate WW1 and Heritage Open Days promotion which the mayor would attend.  Terry Byrne suggested that the Norfolk Military Owners Club be contacted to asked them if they would like to show off their vehicles. 

6 THE GREAT WAR - A TIME LINE
To discuss the time line.

The Events Manager suggested that the four In Bloom Banners in front of Palmers could be used to advertise four key events of WW1, these could include the first bombardment or 13 April 1916 King George's visit to the Naval Base.  Paul Davies stated that there are three blue plaques that he would like schools to be involved with.

a) Great Yarmouth Minster Preservation Trust 

Two flyers were tabled for the First World War Exhibition and Poetry and Tunes from the First World War.

Ann Edwards suggested that people put photo's up in the exhibition of relatives or people that they knew.

b) Norfolk Museums

50 students volunteered to carry work out outside of school and would be looking at the archives in Library for people from Great Yarmouth who went to war and were in the battlefields. The work would then tour Great Yarmouth with the first venue to show the work being St Georges Theatre. Work would also be carried out on the Question of conscience which would be about conscientious objectors. This would not be pro or anti war the students would look at both arguments.  Workshops would be held with poets on WW1 which would be based on experiences of local people.
a flat packed tank had been purchase from a model maker which would be taken around with the travelling exhibition.

(c) Great Yarmouth Archeological Society

It was reported that the plaques would be installed as part of the Archeological Society.  It was hoped that a fly pass would be arranged for the Maritime Festival.  

5 schools were making films that would be shown at St Georges Theatre.

8 ANY OTHER BUSINESS
To consider any other business as may be determined by the Chairman of the meeting as being of sufficient urgency to warrant consideration.

It was reported that the poppy's that had been planted at Herman School had started shooting but it was unclear if these were flowering yet.  Paul Kelf at GYBS had planted a World War One mix at the Boating Lake.

On the 11th October 2014 a dinner would be held in the Assembly Room by the Mayor which would be WW1 themed with Wine tasting along with a 1914 bottle of sherry which would be auctioned off.
