1 APOLOGIES FOR ABSENCE
To receive any apologies for absence.

An apology for absence was received from Steve Miller (Norfolk Museum Service).

The minutes of the meeting held on 24 October 2013 were confirmed subject to the following amendments:-

That Steve Miller had been welcomed and round the tabled introductions had taken place.

Councillor Jeal expressed concern that some of the points raised at the last meeting had not been included in the minutes.

The Chairman asked that the Heritage ticket be included as the Head of the Museum Service had stated that multi site ticket offers encouraged visitors.

The Committee considered the Eastern Area Manager's report on Great Yarmouth Museums for the period October 2013 - February 2014.

The Eastern Area Manager reported in detail on the following issues in his report:-

  • Visitor Figures
  • Staff
  • Youth Engagement Programme - presentation by Tricia Hall
  • Schools
  • Exhibitions
  • Events Programme
  • First World War commemoration 2014-18
  • The Shoals of herring
  • Collections Management

The Committee noted the Eastern Area Manager's report attached to the agenda and the Chairman congratulated both the Eastern Area Manager and Tricia Hall on their achievements on projects.

RESOLVED:
That the report be noted.


4 PRESERVATION TRUST UPDATE
The Principal Conservation Officer will give a verbal update at the meeting.

It was reported that 113 King Street would be completed in May and had come in under budget and that a Gallerist would be employed and that the post had been advertised.  135 King Street have appointed an architect and that this would be office space and residential.

Work on the cemeteries in conjunction with Great Yarmouth College was taking place each Friday.  60 monuments had been repaired which exceeded the funders request.  Local school children were making bird boxes.

The Town Wall Towers was being converted to holiday accommodation and it was hoped that these would be ready by the Summer season.

A 1st World Ward memorial was now looking for a new home once it had been repaired

Work was being carried out on Holkham Hall.

In St Lukes church yard, Cobholm there are two boards with names on, one with the names of people who took part in the war and one with the names of people who died in the war.  The Conservation Officer stated that in light of the change of use of the church it could become a condition of the application that these remain and be preserved.

It was reported that Great Yarmouth Borough Council Press Officer would be asked to prepare a press release to ask members of the public for any suggestions of location for the repaired World War 1 memorial. 
 
5 HERITAGE STRATEGY UPDATE
The update report from Laura Crossley, Consultant, will be discussed.

It was reported that a consultation event would be held in the Assembly Room at the Town Hall on 27th March 2014 to talk about the Council's Heritage Strategy along with branding for the Town.
 
6 PRESENTATION ON YOUTH ENGAGEMENT
Tricia Hall (NMS) will give a presentation on Youth Engagement.

Tricia Hall reported that she was a Youth Engagement Officer and that she worked with 14-24 year olds.  Working with schools but alot of what was carried out was outside of school working on creative collisions which is in conjunction with various schools, Horatio House and Colleges.

She then spoke of the following projects:-

Museum of No
What would youths be reminiscing about in 40 years time.

Wide Angle Documentary Photography Group
Working with professional photographers on abstract life and market life.

Maritime Effect
Work with MAP, over a two year period on Maritime these which include Maritime Food, Natural World and History of Ships.  It was hoped that these projects would increase civic pride.

Museum of based placements
Working with Job Centre Plus young volunteers would help with events, programme and engagement projects.

Destinations - Vauxhall links  and all our stories
At Nexus students learnt to do bridge building whilst learning engineering skills. 

Great Yarmouth High Schools Photography Course 
43 Students encouraged to do family photography.  15 photographers were now studying surrealist photography.

Other groups they were working with included YOT, MIND, The Priory for dads and Just GFS platform.

7 ANY OTHER BUSINESS
Discussion of any other business not on the agenda.

In February 2014 the Norfolk Museums Service moved to a Cultural Exception model, which allows a VAT exemption on admission income for 2013/14.  They would also be investigating Gift Aid.  

2014 was the 10th Anniversary of Time and Tide.  It was suggested that Michael Taylor should be invited to any celebration events.
